BLACK MOUNTAINS OPEN - 2007
This will be a five day competition based in Crickhowell and the competition headquarters will be in the Crickhowell Telecottage as usual - opposite the War Memorial. The cost will be £50 for those who have not already entered the whole series and payment should be sent (with a cheque payable to BHPA Hang Gliding Competitions) to John Aldridge at the address given on the entry form. Waypoint upload and registration will be in the Comp HQ or the Vine Tree during the evening of Thursday 3rd May and briefing in the village car park (behind the Fire Station) at 9:30 a.m. on Friday 4th May. Latecomers can also register at this time. All pilots should be prepared to present their BHPA card at registration and this is essential for any pilot who has not flown in the series so far this year. Tasks will be set (weather permitting) Friday through to Tuesday.
There will probably be a "Hog Roast" or something similar in the Britannia Inn during the evening of Monday 7th May (to be confirmed later) and the cost of this for pilots is included in the entry fee. However the pilots will have to pay a small sum for their retrieve drivers and any other guests to attend.
A number of South East Wales sites will be available for the competition including the following:
Nant-y-Moel (SW)
Rhigos (N)
Merthyr (W)
Abertysswg (NW)
Pontlottyn (NE)
Blorenge (SE, NE, NW)
Unfortunately the landowners will not allow competitions on Hay Bluff and insist that it is a members only site; Pandy is also closed to us during May each year. Any pilot arriving early for the competition should note this. The SE Wales club web site guide is at http://www.sewhgpgc.co.uk/
Essential maps are the latest Southern England and Wales half mil air chart (latest edition), plus OS Travelmaster 7, Wales & West Midlands. Appropriate OS 1:50,000 maps of the area may also be useful.
Saturday onward we will aim for the following routine:
09:30 Provisional results available
De-brief previous days task
Met brief for the day
Announcements
Site for the day decided
TBN Task briefing on site.
The competition panel members responsible for this competition are:
Organiser: Graham Phipps, mobile 07785 593559
Meet Director: John Aldridge, mobile 07720 559083

Reports:-
The British Open (and first round of the British Open Series) was held in South EastWales on five days over the early May Bank Holiday. This year the series is being sponsored by UK Airsports,WillsWing, Cross Country Magazine and Green Dragons who are providing day prizes and funding the retrieve drivers' food at the competition dinners.
There was a good turnout, with over 50 flexwings and more interest in the rigid wing class than we've seen in recent years with five pilots. The weather didn't play ball and there was only one valid task on the first day. Conditions were uninspiring and a short 30kmtask was set from the Blorenge down to the coast near Newport. Only two pilots made it to goal, Graham Phipps on a flexwing and Neville Almond on a rigid. Here's how they did it…
Graham writes: “Boy it was cold on the top of the Blorenge. By briefing time I was barely able to write the task down as my hands were shaking so much, and looking at the sky there seemed little point anyway. However things soon improved and it was time to see what my new WillsWing T2 144 fresh out of the box could do. I spent a good 30minutes bobbing up and down before finally getting a solid climb to base (2,300ft asl) over the south-east face. Arriving at cloudbase with a few others there was no point in hanging around and I was quickly off, heading for a couple of gliders circling low in the foothills. Amazingly, very few of the gaggle followed. What more can you want than cloudbase and gliders circling low? By the time they did they were well below and I was back in lift.
“Spotting a rigid a km or so away, nearly on track to the crosswind turnpoint, I pushed on and joined up with newcomer Jamie Cannon. We quickly found lift back to base but the rigid (Neville Almond) was long gone and never to be seen again. We cloud-hopped towards the turnpoint. The glider was flying superbly with little effort, making the climbs easy and the glides relaxing. A small blue hole near the lake proved that it was not all straightforward, and Jamie and I both began losing height. We got to the eastern side and found broken lift although Jamie, now a fair bit lower, never really recovered and landed just past the turnpoint.
“Now back at base at 2,700ft, I was enjoying the views whilst trying to pinpoint the turnpoint. A gentle climb just short set me up nicely and I nipped into the cylinder to get my tracklog point before returning to the lift. The sky was now looking a lot bluer than previously. At 2,500ft I expected the target to pop up on my Bräuniger but it stayed stubbornly blank. I climbed higher, but still nothing. I headed towards goal in anticipation, but nothing. Stopping to climb again, not wanting risk falling short, I did the maths and convinced myself to glide for it, and off I went. With good air the coast was within easy reach. The MLR woke up and showed 4.9:1 glide to goal, giving me the ideal opportunity to try out the T2's speed-gliding characteristics (superb).
“Arriving at goal when no one else is there (or at least they are but you can't see them) always leads to shadows of doubt creeping in. These were compounded after landing by Sara Green (thank you for the retrieve) announcing that the co-ordinates that John Aldridge had given her no way tied up with the locality I was in. However when she announced that they were located some 534km away my faith in my
navigational capabilities returned.
“Whilst derigging I kept scanning the sky, fully expecting new arrivals, but no other flexwings made it . Despite having landed only a couple of fields away (and having flown over him several times), I didn't even know Neville was there until he popped his head over the gate. I must get some new contact lenses!“
Neville writes: “With the sun only breaking through the overcast by 2:30 and base at 2,700ft asl, the 20- mile dogleg to a remote goal looked ambitious. Maxing out at a mere 900ft above the Blorenge the route southwards following the hills looked obvious, but pilots could be seen scattered along the hills and that option didn't look promising. On a positive note, mild thermals were in existence and I decided to attempt a straight line towards the first turnpoint at around 3:50pm, for no other reason than a few others (including Grant Crossingham and Phippsy) also deciding to go. The mild thermals would shut down quite early and a positive decision was necessary.
“After three miles we encountered a few blips of lift. I started a turn and the five of us scattered, looking for that elusive lift. Good teamwork! We hadn't quite reached the lift, and on seeing the others sinking I straightened back on course. Another 20 seconds gliding put me in the thermal - a good result but I would have preferred the company in the marginal conditions. I repeated three glides and scratchy climbs, ever climbing at more than 300ft/min, but the broken scraggy cloud was actually proving quite
reliable.
“Staying between 2,000 and 2,500ft was encouraging, but there was only one line looking soarable and I was now 1.5miles crosswind of the first turnpoint. There was no option but to glide into a blue hole to snatch the turnpoint and then steer towards Newport.Within minutes the ground was approaching, and I ended up at just 800ft over the huge golf course near theM4/Newport junction. I connected with some poor lift which I happily struggled with (off-course) to the outskirts of Newport. Goal was now just five miles away crosswind, and from2,500ft it looked easily possible. I encountered a long stretch of 600ft/min down on the way, but I arrived with just 300ft to spare. I had barely scratched the surface of my food supply when Phippsy sailed overhead just eight minutes later.”
On the Saturday we had lighter north-easterly winds. The forecast for better lift than the day before and the wind to drop and swing more north. A task was set fromt he Blorenge to PenMilan in the Brecon Beacons and back to Castle Meadows. Most people rigged in the bowl, but eventually the wind set in from the east and everyone carried over. The paraglider wind dummies were not too inspiring, but after 2pm a few people started launching intermittently. No one got more than a few hundred feet above take-off and the furthest anyone flew was 8km, landing just short of Crickhowell - not far enough to activate the task. Eventually the task was canned to avoid a mass sled ride into the sensitive fields on the way to Crickhowell. The next few days were all blown out and often wet as well. On the 4th day, with strong winds and a forecast of more for the last day, the competition was canned a day early and the prizes awarded.

This meet is the second in the British Open Hang Gliding Series 2007 (the first being in SE Wales over the early May B/H weekend) and is based in Hawes. The location of the competition headquarters will be The Green Dragon in Hardraw (just to the North of Hawes) and the function room of the pub will be used for scoring the comp, which runs from Saturday 26th May through until Monday 28th May. Hawes itself is approximately midway along the A684 between the M6(J37) and the A1 (Leeming).
This is a stand-alone competition but will also score for the series and pilots who have already flown the other meets have series scores to bring forward. As in the other meets, eligibility only requires a minimum rating of Pilot, current BHPA membership and (for UK based pilots) membership of their local club. To enter just download an application form from the DOCUMENTS section of this site and send it to the address given, together with a cheque for £40 if you have not already entered the full series.
This will be a three-day competition with registration and GPS upload in the Crown Hotel during the evening of 25th May, late registrations and initial briefing in the old station car park (at the East end of town behind the Rope Museum) at 9 a.m. on Saturday 26th August. Tasks will be set (weather permitting) through until, and including, Monday 28th August.
After the first morning we will aim for the following routine:
- 0930 Provisional results available
- De-brief previous days task
- Met brief for the day
- Announcements , including site for the day
- TBN Task briefing on site.
A number of Dales and North Yorkshire club sites will be available for the competition including the following:
- Wether Fell (WNW)
- Nappa Scar (SSW)
- Cow Close Fell (NNE-NE)
- Semerwater (NNW & SE)
- Model Ridge (N)
Unfortunately the landowners will not allow competitions on Stags Fell and insist that it is a members only site. Any pilot arriving early for the competition should NOT FLY this site and contact the Dales Club for alternatives.
Essential maps are the latest Northern England and Northern Ireland half mil air chart, plus OS Travelmaster 5, Northern England. Appropriate OS 1:50,000 maps of the area may also be useful.
The competition will be scored using the GAP formula as incorporated in the CIVL approved RACE programme. Any turnpoints will be validated by GPS in conjunction with the CompeGPS programme and you can check which models are supported - or decide which to buy - at their website. A small number of GPS units are available for loan from the Comps Panel for pilots who do not yet own one. We have GPS to PC serial port leads for most Garmin models and the MLR; pilots with other GPS models should bring their own leads and any additional drivers needed.
The Meet Director for this competition is John Aldridge (mobile 07768 961971) and the local organiser is Dales Club chairman Trevor Birkbeck (mobile 07836 342312)
An accommodation guide is available from the Upper Wensleydale Business Association Help Line on 01969 667676 or try either Travel England or this website. Another website for Yorkshire Dales accommodation. Other useful links are:

Report
All eyes were on the weather forecast as the Dales comp approached. The outlook was so bad for the
2nd and 3rd day of this three-day comp that some folk didn't come. They missed some good flying,
including the Friday before the comp.
Thermal strength on Wether Fell was considerable and made rough by wave conditions which showed up later in
the day.
On the Saturday John Aldridge set a good task of 128km from Wether to a goal at Bridlington. This shouldn't be too difficult - down Wensleydale, across the Vale of York keeping out of the ATZs, pass to the south of Sutton Bank and you're on your way!
A huge gaggle formed and hoovered many pilots off the hill. Conditions were much less rough than on Friday. We were on our way! One climb I had was a solid 10-up to 5,900ft. A lot of pilots got to the edge of the Vale of York with 5,000 ft and flew across without turning, maintaining height by porpoising.
No need to worry about the ATZs for them. The leading gaggle of Carl Wallbank, Gordon Rigg, Bruce Kavanagh and Grant Crossingham headed across the moors for a bit as the clouds were better.
Grant missed a climb at Flamingo Park and Carl and Gordon set off for a sea-breeze cloud, to be followed by Bruce when he got up. Grant chose a different cloud to head for and later flew over the others at height , landing 9km from goal and winning the day.
Justin Needham had flown across the Vale of York at 5,000ft in lift with Gary Wirdnam. After that he got left for dead as Gary's new Aeros Combat glided off into the distance. The performance of the top gliders is clearly still improving. The top six on the day were Grant Crossingham, Carl Wallbank, Dave Matthews, Gordon Rigg, Bruce Kavanagh and GaryWirdnam.
The next two days were wiped, and that was that -two tasks out of a total of eight days of competition.
The reserve comps on 30th June 30th - July 1st orJuly 7th - 8th are now activated and the prayer mat is out. Clive Belbin has been trained up to carry out the scoring so, if the weather is rubbish, we'll just blame him!

This meet is the third, and probably the final meet of the 2007 Open Hang Gliding Series (the others being the British Open in SE Wales and the Yorkshire Dales meet). The competition base will be in The Inn on the Green (01588 650105), Wentnor where we will probably be scoring in the bar (?). Wentnor is below the Long Mynd itself to the West. Dates are 21st to 25th July inclusive with registration and GPS uploading during the evening of Friday 20th July at the Inn on the Green.
This will be a stand-alone competition but will also score for the series and pilots will bring to this meet points scored in the previous 2007 Open Series comps. As in the other Open Series meets, eligibility only requires a minimum rating of Pilot, current BHPA membership and (for UK based pilots) membership of their local club. To enter just download an application form from the DOCUMENTS section of this site and send it to the address given, together with a cheque for £50.
Tasks will be set (weather permitting) from Saturday 21st July through until, and including, Wednesday 25th July. Entry includes a Hog Roast (plus veggie option if notified in advance) which will probably take place on the Monday evening at the Inn on the Green. Additional tickets for this can be booked by email to Mike Armstrong.
Any pilot arriving early for the competition should not fly local sites without contacting the host club. The Long Mynd club web site guide can be found at http://www.longmynd-soaring.org.uk/ and the Mid Wales site guide at http://homepages.enterprise.net/wises/
Essential maps are the latest Southern England and Wales half mil air chart, plus OS Travelmaster 7, Wales & West Midlands. Appropriate OS 1:50,000 maps of the area may also be useful.
Registration and GPS uploads will take place at the Inn on the Green during the evening of Friday 20th July. The initial briefing and late registrations will take place in the car park of the Inn on the Green at 09:30 21st July. After the first morning we will aim for the following routine:
- 0930 Provisional results available
- De-brief previous days task
- Met brief for the day
- Announcements
- Site for day announced
- TBN Task briefing on site.
Officials responsible for this meet are:
- John Aldridge, Meet Director, mobile 07720 559083
- Mark Stewart, club liaison, mobile 07790 864242
Accommodation lists can be obtained from the local Tourist Information Offices but The Inn on the Green itself has 4 or 5 rooms in a variety of configurations. The telephone number is 01588 650105. There is also a campsite next door to the pub, The Green Caravan Park - URL below. There is also another camp site closer to the Mynd which is worth checking out, the Poplar Farm campsite - 01588 650383 for details & a brochure.Other links for local accommodation are:

Report
With Gloucestershire inundated, we got just one flyable day out of five in late July at the Long Mynd. As it turned out it wasn't a bad day at all. Closed roads precluded a task beyond the Severn Valley to the south-east, so we chose our frequently used goal at Castlemorton Common just beyond the Malverns.
The task began with an unusual double-back along the Long Mynd ridge designed to get people on course quickly, but it turned out to have the opposite effect. Clocks were running as pilots flew the very short distance down the ridge and back for the first 5km. This was when the problems set in, because with the clock ticking many of the lead racers were reluctant to go unless they flew into a strong thermal immediately after returning to the launch turnpoint.
Much faffing took place with many taking restarts. We also had a dramatic crosswind to fly, and whilst the south end of the ridge made huge sense to ease this really hard problem, all the cumulus was at the north end, which increased the faff possibilities no end. Meanwhile opportunities to go XC were being missed and the sky was looking less promising.
After my third restart I got a sinking feeling that I might be on the ridge for good unless I got moving. Knowing that it commonly kicks off in the lee of the Mynd, I dribbled off in a miserable bump from just south of the gliding club. This soon abandoned me with about 1,800 asl and a couple of km over the back. I took a glide towards some marginal cu to the south-east towards Ludlow and found a proper climb-out. Jamie Cannon meanwhile was leaving from the north end and I kept an eye on his progress.
With a strong westerly crosswind glides were at 90 degrees to the climb lines. Every drift in a weak thermal made the course line harder. My XC speed towards the goal was only steady, and that was before the overdevelopment set in.
Halfway between Ludlow and Bromyard I needed to choose between a usable line of cumulus heading downwind or the course line beneath spreadout grey to the south. I had to take south and was soon looking for a low save off a grey field amongst grey. I got lucky I guess, and minced away as the sky marginally improved.
Several weak thermals later I was able to appreciate the sight of the Malverns finally within guaranteed reach. I hugely appreciate flying in the UK every time I fly to this strikingly attractive ridge. Getting there also meant goal was at hand.
I landed as the sky opened up. At Great Malvern the day looked superb from about 3:30pm although the westerly crosswind seemed to be getting stronger, and this was the hardest problem for pilots still in the air. Gordon Rigg came into goal half an hour behind me having been blown well off route and having taken a very different path. My multiple restarts paid off and provided a useful overall edge. Most others got blown too far off the course line to recover. Bob Little made it to within 11km but several were left behind on the hill. The lesson? As ever: get going!

Report
Day 1
The July 7th - 6th saw the activation of the British Open Series reserve comp date in South East Wales. Obnoxious weather during the season so far meant that only two tasks had been flown: 31km from the Blorenge during the original South-East Wales meet in April and 127km from Wether Fell at the Yorkshire meet in May.
Being held at fairly short notice, this extra meet was a chance for some of the less accomplished pilots like myself to rack up a few points simply by being there. Others who were unable to attend left a few places open in the rankings for those that were.
Optimism at the 'low pressure with a hint of a ridge' forecast led to the first task set by Meet Director Kathleen Rigg being 177.2km from Merthyr to a goal near to Milton Keynes. Conditions at launch looked promising, though a brisk 15 - 20mph wind meant that when you went over the back you really went over!
The sky was a mix of cumulus, misty bits and some convergence toward the Severn Estuary, as well as some big blue gaps out toward the flatlands beyond the valleys behind Merthyr. I launched fairly early to find that the air was surprisingly smooth. Thermals were abundant though they felt broken to the less-experienced competitor (me).
The climb that finally took me over the back was like the hand of God. It planted me near to cloudbase at around 3,000ft above the hill (about 4,400ft asl). If only I'd capitalised on it! By the time I'd got to cloudbase a slight northerly component had caused me to drift south of the course line. It was the first time I'd flown at Merthyr, and after hearing the horror stories of valley landings I was keeping one eye out for safe landing fields instead of both eyes on the sky.
Not long after this I was low over a gully on one of the valley ridge-tops, picking off the little bubbles that were coming through and hoping one would be my low save. When I finally thought I'd found my route back up I managed a couple of very tight 360s, only to be spat out into the surrounding sink. I top-landed nearby about 10km into the task.
A handful of others shared my fate, but a few more astute pilots had stayed with the good clouds along a line to the south of track to clear the valleys before working back north later on. These included Dave Matthews and Will Greenwood who had both got to goal.
Justin Needham, who also got to goal, writes: “Merthyr did its common trick of shutting down with a vengeance for several long minutes before the big lift. Struggling to stay airborne, I suspected it would lift off. Grant went down and I nearly followed. Eventually the enormous strong cycle which quickly got me away lasted long enough for all those who had top landed to have a really good crack.
“With 177km to fly and a crosswind to negotiate I didn't hang about. I connected up with Bruce during the run out of the Valleys. He pulled ahead after finding a stronger core at the Blorenge, but I later saw him faltering in the gloom when overdevelopment struck us at Ross-on-Wye.
“Negotiating this overdevelopment was a defining part of the flight and put many on the deck. What had been a humungous sea-breeze convergence line shut down rapidly and shaded a massive area of the ground. I needed to make a very determined northwards glide to reconnect with the sunshine after the initial romp towards Ross.
“Beyond Gloucester things initially looked good again, but I flew into a large hole in the lee of the Cotswolds where there was a big area of descending air. I took a dodgy low save in the blue some 15km before the turnpoint which got me back in the running. At this point I was letdown by some faulty GPS button-pressing, having dialled in a turnpoint 3km north of the correct one. As it was in an almost perfectly straight line with goal, the overall task distance was unchanged and I suspected nothing till we scored in!
“Dave had a faster run with Will, apparently flying the stronger conditions which seem to have developed across the Cotswolds. We flew the same thermal in our final climb, Dave leaving lower to take a dodgy final glide - but as it turned out expertly judged. Dave made goal a couple of minutes ahead of me - considerably stretching his harness in the process - and Will (third in goal) a couple of minutes behind. Although second into goal I finished fourth thanks to my GPS error.”

Day Two
Sunday at Merthyr was less windy and a little more top-cover threatened to take the edge off proceedings. The pace of preparation seemed much slower among the flock. A 73.2km task to Highnam near Gloucester was called, followed by a period spent watching the rain clouds gather out in front. The 1:30pm start-time coincided with the arrival of the looming rainstorm.
When the sky cleared enthusiasm was still hard to detect among the group, although an early batch of toe-dippers got up to show us what the air was doing. All credit to them - when the sink cycle came not everyone made it back to top-land, Grant Crossingham ending up in the sports field at the bottom.
An hour later a few plucky contestants launched into a more perky sky. As nearly everyone who launched was going up I followed them. After a couple of beats of the ridge I connected with a reliable 5 - 6-up which took me pretty much all the way to cloudbase. However the bit of cloud I was under - some convergence or mist - was only about 2,500ft above the hill. I skirted the edge and joined up with a few others in a small gaggle working the 1 and 2-ups over the back of Merthyr.
Staying with this until I could see the flatlands in the distance, I got bored with waiting and took a gamble on a nearby cloud that appeared along the course line. I spotted two other gliders on the deck and feared my chosen route might meet with a similar fate. I managed to clear the fourth ridge-top back and sneak a landing on its lee side. All seemed well until my feet touched the ground, when I was instantly soaked up to my thighs. My two broken uprights confirmed that I'd landed in a hidden ditch. Well, I didn't see it!
Those that motored onto goal included Graham Phipps, who writes: “With the clock ticking I was keen to get going. I launched to find good lift on the ridge and gave an encouraging shout to the ground. It proved not to be such a wise move as on turning back I was met with a wall of gliders that had just launched. We quickly established into a thermal which saw a good number of gliders to cloudbase or very close.

“Bruce Kavanagh, Steve Green and I all set off on a fast glide over the valleys, keen to make up for time wasted on the ground. Dave Matthews (now series leader) gave chase and we all met up in the next climb which saw us back to base. Running along a good street at high speed we were quickly out of the valleys, past the Blorenge and looking for our first climb in the flatlands. Not long before we had seen gliders climbing (presumably Gordon and Carl). Again the climb was good and we moved as a group from cloud to cloud, making good time until things began to look a little on the blue side up ahead.
“Bruce and I discussed tactics. The obvious choice was to put the brakes on under the last cloud and get as high as we could before heading out into the blue towards goal. The lift was weak and broken and we couldn't quite make base. As we began to sink again it was time to take our chances, or head back upwind to hopefully better lift and wait.
“We took our chances, and after only a few km we hit s reasonable 3-up lift and circled up. Getting the jump on the others, I pulled away in a 5-up to the base of a newly developing cloud. Here was my chance to rein a few points back in on Dave if I could make goal. Off I went with 27km to go and a glide of 18.9:1 showing on the MLR. The distance went down but the glide angle required went up as I hit some poor air. Bruce and Steve had headed off track to the north to a large town and were encountering light lift as I began to sink into trouble.
“Gliding from ground source to ground source with no result, it looked like my day was over. With height running out fast I diverted to try some large buildings at Mitcheldean about 14km out, but again no luck. Do I hang around them or glide over the next village with limited landings? Gliding over the village confirmed that the landings were indeed limited, but cruising the upslope behind it the air became almost buoyant. Bits of up were followed by bits of down, but still the average was down.
“With no more than three beats left before I must land, I found lift! Turn, sink, lift, more lift, turn, sink, lift. A whole 360 and then another. Eventually a solid 5-up got me as high as I needed to be, and with glide angle to spare it was bar in all the way to goal. 15 minutes later Dave arrived, while Bruce and Steve landed around 10km short.”

Well done to everyone involved for a safe and enjoyable competition. Special thanks to Clive Belbin for his scoring efforts, and to Kathleen for taking charge over the two days. I think we all agreed it was a great success.
